Case Study: JJ Curran Crane Company Enhances Employee Efficiency, Reduces Down Renting and Increases Revenue

Company-Wide System Implementation

The JJ Curran Crane company has been running Fleet Cost & Care systems for over 20 years. Employees from every department use NexGen (desktop application) or Atom (mobile application) to simplify the workflows from one department to the next. From clerical staff in the office, to mechanics in the garage, to operators on site and all the way up to the president of the company – everyone uses the system to centralize operations and provide transparency. Using NexGen and Atom across the entire company is critical to their success.

Reduced Cost of Employee Labor

Using Fleet Cost & Care, employees at JJ Curran Crane average a 10% increase in efficiency. Mechanics and operators save time by using the mobile application Atom to complete safety checklists, to gather electronic signatures on site, and to enter their labor. This information flows seamlessly into NexGen – which clerical staff are using back at the office. Since the clerical staff has the information they need to complete their job in one central system, they save time by reducing duplicate data entry and eliminating the need to wait on paperwork from mechanics and operators. The 10% increase in employee efficiency from using both NexGen and Atom saves JJ Curran over $600,000 annually in employee labor alone.

Mechanics save time by having access to inventory parts on the go. Wherever their location, they can look-up part availability no matter which yard a part is located at. This reduces time spent searching for parts and reduces money spent on purchasing parts already in stock.

Operators save on time and efficiency using e-tickets for safety inspections and checklists. They can track and report their labor on every job, indicate if they worked through lunch and submit job tickets and hours worked on their tablet or smartphone. Using e-ticket signatures enabled JJ Curran Crane to reduce risk and liability and save on business insurance. All the information that flows through the business is available in one system anywhere, anytime, on any device without having to wait for operators and mechanics to turn their tickets in.

Clerical staff saves time by having critical information in one central system – payroll, invoices, unit availability, employee certifications and more. With operators submitting their own hours worked on a job site, staff can review and approve payroll for accuracy while being able to quickly invoice customers.

Reduced Down Renting Leads to Increased Revenue

Thanks to the advanced reporting features of NexGen, JJ Curran Crane reduced down renting on one unit by nearly 30%. In 2013, management used the down renting reports to identify that one of their 275 Ton All Terrain cranes was rented at its full capacity only 26% of the time over a three-year period. The management team identified 4,300 billable hours that were charged at  lower rates – demonstrate lost revenue opportunities of $60,000. Taking action based on NexGen reports, the management team worked with the salesperson to adjust their quoting and sales approach.

One year later, the crane had been rented out at its proper unit type 55% of the time – leading to an increase in revenue of $69,000 from just one unit.

“The overall implementation and company-wide usage of the Fleet Cost & Care system saves us time and money every single day. Without this comprehensive fleet management solution, we would be less profitable and less efficient.” – Larry Curran, Owner of JJ Curran Crane Company
